I have searched the forums and didn't found anyone mentioning that Les Bird released source-code of Capstone BUILD games Witchaven 1&2 and Tekwar on his site:
http://www.lesbird.com/CAPSTONE/default.htm
I was wondering does anybody planning to make port of these games?
I am aware that legal status of these games source-code is questionable so admin/mod can lock/delete these topic if he wishes with no hard feelings from me. :)

Like the guy said himself, he doesn't know who owns this property.
The fact that he is an ex-programmer for the company doesn't change anything.
It's a shame to see things like this turn to nothingness though, so hopefully Capstone (or whomever) won't mind.
From the little I know about these games I suspect the source code is probably pretty different from DN3D and SW, so I'm not sure many are interested in doing a port...

Hello, how compile the source-code ???
Is GPL license ???
Sorry my English, I am brazilian... :)
P.S.: Demo version of this games not run correct...
JonoF at
You need Watcom 11 (the DOS version--OpenWatcom has problems) and none of the games compile cleanly as they stand anyway, so there's some modifications you need to make.

OK, I use Watcom 11C and I analyzed *.bat, pparently is used 1

Ok I'm going to bite, Because I am genuinely interested.
Has *anyone* tried to find out who owns what?
Has anyone contacted Les Bird?

Someone obtained to compile the source-code ???
JonoF at
What is there to ask him? Capstone and IntraCorp are dead, so technically the code is in limbo until the copyright law specifies it expires, or someone with the authority to do so grants permission under a suitable license.

If you mean has anyone got the code to compile, yes, I have, but it involved a few hacks and patches to work around the copy protection stuff and missing things. I recently used the modified versions I built to take screenshots for the Build Games section of this site. So, getting the games to build can be done. It just takes some effort and know-how.

Is possible to create step by step to compile the source-code ???

Help me, Jonof, Please...

As a rule, I don't do 'step-by-step' guides for compilation of anything, especially not for things I haven't written. The Capstone code is quite old and if I can be bothered I may boot up my DOS machine and generate a patch to get it all to compile, but from there you're on your own. It's unsupported and unlicensed code and I'm not about to begin supporting it.

OK and then thanks for information

Re: Capstone BUILD Games source
so, jonof, you've said you've compiled the source code, right? Would you consider writing a source port for witchaven 1 and 2 then? maybe it will spark interest of those who own the copyright and then they will grant a gpl license to it.
JonoF at
Considering I'm neglecting the existing ports at the moment, adding two more for games I don't like would be foolish, so no, I wouldn't consider porting them any time soon.
Jonathon
kooltore at
Which are the existing ports ? I havent heard of any.
smoke_tetsu at
By "existing ports" he meant the two Build engine games he has already ported, Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior.
kooltore at
ok, but he is already neglecting them, so it wouldnt make much of a difference
leileilol at
Plus the Witchaven games use an older .MAP format and alot of other arcane hacky things so porting it using jfBuild wouldn't be feasible anyway. It'd also be heavily license breaking.
What's next kooltore, are you going to propose to JF to port Blood over using Blood's leaked alpha code? ::)
Maren at
That's a thing of the past ;D
kooltore at
no leilelol, im not interested in that. And i was asking for a complete new port from the ground up, not by porting jfbuild, which i dont think it's very good. Well, anyways, if jonof doesnt want to do it, maybe someone else will.

You say jfbuild isn't very good and yet you expect him to make you a whole new port in his spare time (which he may not have) of a game he doesn't even like? Jeez.

Yea, pretty much :) Well, if he doesnt want to do it, he doesnt have to, it's not like he's indispensable.
smoke_tetsu at
With as much respect as you show him and his work I would probably think he would not do it. That is on top of the fact that he probably doesn't have enough time to do it, has bigger priorities nor does he even like that game. Doesn't sound like you'd appreciate it anyway.

Yea, I'm pretty much "f*** this guy", he's not that good or necessary. Someone else will port the game.

The required source codes have been available for a while and so far there's only one Shadow Warrior port for the Windows platform, so he's, as matter of fact, necessary, at least for that one in particular. Get over it ;)
Good or not, that's arguably, actually I think he's done a fairly decent job. Seemingly no longer that interested in updating the ports for whatever reason?, that could be it.
kooltore at
Well, actually, there's been two source ports, his, (the crappy one) and icculus' port.

Indeed, but I specified "for the Windows platform", and Icculu's is for Linux.

Try not to confuse reality with your own homo-erotic fantasies. It doesn't make you look very intelligent. :)
