Well, I have a different question for you, so please imagine this:
A guy wake up after being in coma a couple of days. He is almost OK, he remembered very well how he Program in C, and about a dream of making a Build Engine clone.
But there is a BAD NEWS! He lost everything he had learned about Math.
So after this story, I ask you:
What topics on math would you recommend him to study to make his dream come true?
Bye.

Re: A math question!
I would suggest that your friend induce another coma in the hopes of waking up with a more realistic dream. A large wooden mallet should do the trick.
On a more serious note, look here and search for "How do I get started in 3D programming?".

A good primer and helpful guide on the world of 3D Rasterization and the involved math is:
Tricks of the 3D Game Programming Gurus by Andre' LaMothe. http://www.amazon.com/Tricks-Programming-Gurus-Advanced-Graphics-Rasterization/dp/0672318350
If your friend can afford the book it will take him through everything he needs to make a Software 3D engine. Then he'll have enough knowledge to apply that to whatever he wants. ^_^
