Powerslave/Witchaven in Win XP
- I got Powerslave some time ago but could never make it run with any stability in Win XP.
It just keeps on crashing, even if I use DOSBox.
Somebody knows how to do the miracle?
Also, I never tried to run Witchaven in XP, but would be nice to know if someone knows how to make it run in XP too. I never liked this game much, but, since I own it, would be nice to know how to make it run. - Try to install Win 95/98 as second OS and play
- Both are fast and stable here with only SoundFX 2000.
- Actually, I later gave Witchaven a try and, surprisingly enough, it worked under XP. But in a very buggish and sluguish performance...
Under DosBox it works just fine, but, you know, slow.
Anyway... The only way I could bear playing it, is with some sort of port. Limited mouselook makes me sick.
About Powerslave... well, it's not worth the trouble of installing a second OS, I think.
Oh... there was something I still needed to ask about Witchaven. I was going to do it in my other topic... But it was closed (well, we were not talking about Blood source anymore anyway, so it's ok).
People usually distribute modified game EXEs with the purpose of fixing this or that problem that makes it not run in XP. I've seen this happen with a number of games ( I think Cli2nop modifies the game exe too, doesn't it?) and I never saw any game company complaim (but this could be only an incredibly big misinformation of mine).
So... taking the illegal release of Witchaven's source code and porting it would be THAT bad to make someone come after the port maker? - Actually, Powerslave came with a Windows executable as well. I think it was called PS95.EXE but depending on your configuration can/will cause many glitches.
Yes. Unless you say that its based off the illegal source code and/or it becomes popular it would be unlikely that you'd get in trouble but you are still using illegally gathered materials to create an unsponsored change to their trademarked/copyrighted product. - Hum... I see your point. And I agree with it.
Now... taking a look a other possibilities... has someone actually tried to contact the owner of the code about porting it or releasing it?
Because I know Witchaven is not popular, so I guess there's a possibility people haven't asked enough... - AFAIK, no one has tried getting the code. On the other hand I don't believe that it would be that hard to reproduce Witchaven once you figured the mechanics out.
