Hi, I've been experiencing this crash/freeze since the first release and now I know when it happens most. It happens about 5 mins. on the next level after defeating a boss, but sometimes it happens randomly. Sometimes it freezes, sometimes crashes back to the desktop. On SWP it happens only playing about 5 mins on the next level after any boss and it only freezes. Please look up on this for the next release. Regards, Filipe Tolhuizen PS.: I'm using Windows XP SP2

Re: JFSW crash/freeze problem
Well I have put a huge amount of time into these freezes/crashes, both in hardware and in rewriting the code in Swp. I found that your graphics card without a doubt plays the biggest roll in the crashes. It would seem the more modern and the more powerfull your graphics card, the more freezes and crashes you going to have. I have a 6600GT256 and I have my fair share of crashes and hanging. My wife has almost the identical PC setup but uses an old FX5200 and she has not once experienced a crash with SW, although she has complained about the odd crash with Duke3d. If I pull out my 6600 and put back my old Geforce4 TI4200, 80% of my crashes and stuff go away. A friend of mine has just put a new 8800GTS whatever into his PC and has to stop playing SW altogether as he says the crashing and stuff is very bad. He used to have a 6600 like mine. So at the end of the day, go get yourself a nice cheap FX5290 for around $40 and enjoy the game :)

I had the same problem with my P4 1.5, Geforce 3, 256MB of RAM and Windows 98 :(

Windows 98 was not designed to be used anyways, it doesn't count.

But it happened exactly on the same parts and the system changed completly.

Must be evil eye or something ;D

Jonof said it's fixed and will be on the next release, so let's wait for it.

Can't even remember what this problem was. *sigh* Such is what happens when I don't touch things for a long time.

I have a crashing problem. in I think tlevel 12 when Wang says "looks like duke nukem" I go underwater and then when I come up it closes.
filipetolhuizen at
I had a crash problem too on that level too, but it was random.
ProAsm at
90% of underwater problems are normally due to some sort of soundcard setup error. Many people will set their sound to max and thats where the wheels fall off. Remember the original sound was made for: Sampling size 8 bit Sampling rate 8000 - 11025 Voices 8 Thus settings should not exceed more than double the original.

This is not an underwater problem. It's a very annoying Female Ninja problem, which also occurs in the Floating Fortress level with huge numbers of Female Warriors. When she throws a sticky bomb, the game crashes frequently. I wonder if the problem was fixed since I last played the game (a year ago).

This Female Ninja and Sticky bomb crash is only experienced by a few people and it would be interesting to know why. I most certainly dont have this crash and have tried everything to try and create it. I tried on my work PC which really battles to run the game yet it still does not crash. If someone can give me an exact map location, (screenshot maybe) an exact sequence or even a saved game so I can see the crash and/or experience it, it would help, otherwise its very difficult to fix something that is not broken, well... here anyway. I still think its hardware related but I may be wrong :)

Not sure if there's a link here, but now I recall having experienced similar crashes in the bath house level with the original sw.exe for dos. The workaround I came up with was lowering the number of voices to something like 8 or 4, then it would stop crashing.

Yes a correct move. Many people think because they have moden sound cards, everything should be set for maximum where minimum normally works better.

Sorry for reviving an old topic, but good news is I seem to got it working now. My sound settings: 22050khz, 8 bit, stereo, 8 voices. This was with the latest version of SWP. Gonna try it on the original jfsw. Should I raise some settings a little bit? What would be the maximum stable global settings?
Maren at
Well, stabilty depends on your hardware and system in general, there's no definitive word on the matter, but lower settings are usually safer.
And you still have no crashes while playing for a long time or the level after defeating a boss? Have you ever had 'em? Were you always using this settings since the first versions and were them stable for you?
Maren at
"And you still have no crashes while playing for a long time or the level after defeating a boss?"
Correct.
"Have you ever had 'em?"
Nope, but I recall having read that at least one person experienced the "after defeating a boss" crash with an older version.
"Were you always using this settings since the first versions"
Yep.
"and were them stable for you?"
Ancient JFSW versions were a lil less stable but I wouldn't know if my sound settings are to blame.
