I'm new to JonoF's. But I am a old Duke nukem player who used to do some personnal and "forever" mods.. I decided to restart a mod that I want to end now that there is this cool port to make Duke work in Win XP.
The problem is, I installed the port and I can play it very well. But when I set it up to 16 or 32bpp, the scenario gets all black, like there is no light. I can only see when I shoot.
Now even stranger to me is that I can see normally areas that have a light Sector Effect (like the cinema entrance where you can blow up the wall in E1L1), and I can see the first person weapon sprites and HUD as normal.
Do you know - and have the patience =) - to help me on this? I really don't undestand why does this happens. Thank you.
P.S. - I have OpenGl installed - everything, including the filtering (both bilinear and trilinear), in the port seems to work except from this "non-lightning".

Re: please, help with strange problem..
Try increasing the gamma brightness levels in the Video Setup menu. Also, you may want to use EDuke32, as it is updated much more often, is based on JonoF's port, and is much better for mods.
First, go to www.eduke32.com and download the new version.
Next, go to wiki.eduke32.com/stuff and download the latest dated file, and overwrite the old files from the installation.

Thank you for reading.. and you even posted the links.. thanks man. The thing is I already tried the last version of Eduke, but it crashes the game when I try to go for the 16 or 32bpp. That doesn't happens with Jonof's.
In relation to the brightness option I already tried that. But as I said before the strange thing is that it affects only the enviroment, not the menu, the HUD and the first person weapon sprites. Its strikes me really as odd. I'm sorry for complaining with such a lousy problem but it really upsets me because I would like to try making a mod using the HR features.
Either way, and once again, thanks for the suggestions.

I'll post some images so you people may see this strange effect.
You can see how the HUD and the weapon can be seen clearly, such as the sky. But the rest of the map just turns black...

What are your PC specs. If you have a highend graphics card like a 8800GTS or something like that then the chances are thats your problem. On the opposite end of the scale if you use a lowend card like a SIS or something on those lines then thats your problem :) Your PC specs also, like in my case Eduke32 with the latest HRP caused total havoc and my game was unplayable. I redid the whole of the HRP and made a MRP (Medium Resolutuon Pack) and it solved all my problems. You can also try downloading Duke3dw which is a modified version of JFDuke3d but using the latest code which might also help you. http://www.proasm.com/files/dn/Duke3dw_v32.zip Goodluck ;)

Thanks man I think that is the problem...
I tried running it on my desktop (which has a Nvidia...) and everything runs excellent.. I run it in my laptop (lousy SIS...) and I have this problem. I will try to download that "medium" version. Once again, thanks.

Sorry. Just a question. Do I need to have HRP installed to run Duke3dw? Because it "crashes" into desktop when I try to set the 16bpp or 32bpp ingame (no crash when I set those features in the Duke Nukem game title menu).

No you dont need to and can use 8 bit but it wont look very good :) If you are desperate for slightly better graphics I did a Lowres (Lrp) for someone a while back and I'll see if I can find a copy and upload it for you.
Bran_McNobre at
That would really be great. :o
The thing with Duke3dw is that I can run it at 8bpp, but the problem is when I go for the 16bpp and higher. In Duke3dw and EDuke, it crashes. In Jonof's it works, with the exception of those black map textures (that I can only see when I shoot or when there is a Sector Effect to create a light effect.
This LRP only has new textures, pickups and stuff and has no new monsters or any MD2/3 models at all. Its basically to make the game look better and takes away the blocky look as even the textures have been largely scaled down. Just unzip into your Duke folder and it will create a folder called Lowres. Remember to change the Duke3d.def file to read:
//include duke3d_hrp.def include duke3d_lrp.def
You could also try an older version of Duke3dw as I still have this one on my site: http://www.proasm.com/files/dn/Duke3dw_v28.zip

ProAsm, thank you. I really do apreciate your patience.
I will try those and I will give you some feedback.
Thanks man.

Well.... this is really getting boring.
Duke3dw still doesn't work (even the old version), but I found a way to go around my graphical problem with Jonof's.
I build/rebuild the levels without using the "dark" fog. It means, since I want to do some open and wide maps, that I have to find another way to create the atmosfere distance distortion (well, anyway, "fog" in DN3D makes things look like it's always night which I've always disliked - it would be cool if someone created a way to change the color of this "fog" depending on the map so you could create a foggy grey day, a golden dusk, etc..).
Anyway, I'm now trying to run your LRP in Jonof's (because it is the only port where I am able to run 16bpp and 32bpp) - but it seems that when I put the code line in the Duke3d.def to include the duke3d_lrp.def, after coping the LRP folder into my Duke3d folder, it doesn't even allow me to go beyond the behind radioactive sign explosion screen. After I hear the explosion it crashes into desktop (although it continues to run "behind", probably shutting down - I can see it in the task manager "eating up" my memory until I shut it down manually).
I'm glad that I can run the game now like I was playing DN3D in N64, but to use better textures and sprites would be simply the final touch.
Anyway, thank you for your help. I will continue to try - in my spare time - to find where the hell is the problem with this.
You also made me a permanent visitor of your site =)
Again, thanks for the time.

Looks like what may help you is an older version of the Hrp, one around 2005 as that was pretty straight forward and never had any fog, shadows and stuff like that. Check around and see if you can find one like the Duke3d_Hrp_1005 would probably do the trick :)
Bran_McNobre at
I can't find that version of hrp. :(
Although, I will continue my mod like I was working for "old" DN3D. When I finish it I will try to edit it in my desktop computer - adding high resolution sprites for it, and maybe even textures. The advantage will be that even if you don't have HRP, you will be able to play my mod anyway.
ProAsm, thanks man.
By the way, it is really cool to have all those "forgotten and lost" mods in your site with such an easy way to install and play (*.bat + *.grp = great job!).
