I'm considering buying this plugin and have the trial version, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting good results. I've looked at the site and checked the help files but can't seem to find anything much in the way of information on appropriate settings.
Can anyone hook me up to a solid tutorial on using this critter as it does seem like it will be rather handy if I can figure out how to use it. Currently I use Fireworks for PNG-8's with alpha transparency but I'm hoping the Photoshop plugin will give me a bit more versatility on settings.
By the way, I really would advise upgrading your SMF installation to the latest stable version (1.1.10). It is, of course, entirely up to the site administrator but there have been several security patches since 1.1.7. If you're wondering if I'm just some tosser sounding off the answer is yes, but I happen to be a tosser that knows a bit about SMF. ;)
Cheers.
PS: The reason I'm messing around with png-8 is because we are using quite a lot of them in the new default theme for SMF 2.0.

Re: PNGOUT Photoshop plugin.
Thank you for your interest in the pngout plugin.
The plug-in is a UI for the pngout code, and a tutorial on its options is here: http://advsys.net/ken/util/pngout.htm
There are two modes for the UI for the plug-in. The simple UI is a point-and-click easy UI that doesn't require any knowledge of the PNG format. The Advanced UI assumes technical knowledge of the PNG format.
If your image has 256 colors or less, then the plug-in should automatically use png-8 and correctly handle the alpha channel. If you are on CS2 or earlier, then you will need to use Open As instead of Open to read png-8 with alpha files due to a bug in PhotoShop that was fixed in CS3. You still need to choose PNGOUT as the file type when opening files in CS4 because the default plug-in for PNG kills the alpha channel in png-8 images.
